The goals of this module

Realising that different cultures perceive things differently and/or play by different rules

Learning to cope with differences and to function effectively in a multicultural group

What is it about?

In this module, we want you to explore what it means to encounter a different culture you might not be familiar with. While completing this module, you will be confronted with various videos with little information. Once you finished watching, you will be asked questions about the content. So watch closely!

Watch the following videos and try to get a sense of the game, how it works and what it is about. As a hint, they are playing the BARNGA game where each person receives 5 random cards (4 possible symbols of cards, with 1 to 10 as values of cards). Players are aware of the rules, you are the only one who does not know. Players are also not allowed to talk during the game. As for the rest of the rules, we leave it up to you to find out!

How was it, playing a game where you do not know the rules and the rules being switched around with each video? At what point did you realise that something wasn’t quite right?

This game and activity highlights the struggle of having to encounter an established group of people who know how the “game” works, not being able to communicate with them, but still trying to win. This is a playful and easier portrayal of what migrants go through, having to navigate a new country and quite often not being able to speak the language.

You can reflect more on the activity with these questions:

  • What are your impressions of the game? How did you feel at different times during the game?
  • What real-life situation did this game remind you of?
  • What links can you make with the situation of people who migrate?

Module 2: Migrations in question
